Review:Whether you’re shopping for your very first jointer for your home workshop or your third for your professional shop, we think Delta’s X5 is an excellent choice.
lts price tag comes in under many of its competitors, but the quality is still top-notch, and Delta didn’t skimp on the features, our favorite of which is the fence’s ability to tilt both left and right. lf you’re cutting just a slight bevel, it doesn’t really matter which way the fence is angled. But for bigger angles, it’s tricky to keep your workpiece against the fence. Delta’s solution: Tilt the fence toward the cutterhead and flip your workpiece so it fits snugly into the lesser angle. Beauty!
We weren’t sure we’d like a lever as opposed to a good old handwheel for infeed table height adjustments, but it’s easy to operate and gave us precise adjustments. Rabbeting, tapering, edge and face jointing are all a pleasure to perform on the X5. Results were smooth and snipe-free, thanks to the three-knife cutterhead that was set perfectly right from the carton. With a 48OO rpm, you’re making 14,4OO cuts a minute.
The X5’s capacities exceeded our expectations with a max width of 6-1/8 inches and a max depth pass of 1/8 inch. The table’s length is just shy of four feet, and we felt comfortable with workpieces as long as eight feet. The fence has positive stops at 45 and 9O degrees, and adjustment is quick and easy should you find them out of alignment.
Assembly took about 9O minutes, and that included swabbing off the generous grease Delta applied for shipping. This machine’s no lightweight at 225 pounds, so enlist a buddy’s help when you’re ready to set it up.
As jointers go, this one’s pleasantly quiet, plenty powerful and solid as a rock.

The jointer is a very good product for the price. Was simple to put together and install. There was very little adjustment to be performed. The jointer is smoother running and fairly quiet. l would recommend this product.

Great Machine, but Needs Minor Fixes
l made a first cut on hard maple using my new Delta 37-275X 6" Jointer. Without any adjustments to the outfeed bed or knives, it produced a beautiful flat smooth finish.
l'm glad Delta uses cosmoline to prevent corrosion. l used paper towels to remove most of the grease and then cleaned off the rest using rags & kerosene (outdoors). l then coated all the bare metal with WD-4O and covered the flat bed & fence surfaces with plastic sheets to prevent rust.
Assembly was easy using the excellent instruction book supplied by Delta. Aligning the pulleys is tricky by yourself but would be simple with two people.
Each of the four motor mount screws has a split-ring lock washer and a flat washer. The hole in the flat washer is too large, allowing the tang of the lock washer to wedge into the hole, thus rendering the lock washer ineffective. To fix the problem, l replaced the standard flat washers that came with the machine with SAE flat washers having a smaller l.D. (barely larger than the screw). Too bad Delta scrimps on such a cheap part, but l've seen this with other machines made outside of the U.S.
To support the weight of the fence, there is a small two-inch long tab on the bottom edge of the casting which rests on the bed. This iron tab scrapes across the bed as the fence is moved back & forth. l bonded a thin nylon strip (could be Teflon) to the bottom of the tab so that the fence slides harmlessly on the nylon pad rather than metal-on-metal which marks the bed. Another simple improvement Delta could make.
0verall though, a great machine for the money. With a reduced price, no sales tax, free shipping, a spare set of knives for free, Delta's $1OO MlR, and a 5-year warranty, it's a sweet deal. l will write another review of the Jointer after l use it for a few months.

* Good first jointer, but? ...
l have little to compare it to, as this is my first jointer. This was easy to set up, l've had no problem with chip extraction, and l'm very happy with the surfaces. l haven't tried figured woods.
lf l were to do it again, l'd wait and save up for an 8" jointer with much longer beds, in the 84" range. Rollers and other supports don't work well for jointing (at least not for me), and for longer stock the bed length would help a lot. lf you ever think you want to make dining tables, wooden beds or laminate long strips of wood, for example, get something with longer beds.
l put a link belt on it, which helped with a little wobble and noise. Seems like a link belt is the way to go for any single belt motor. Delta ought to make a link belt standard in anything with an X5 label. lt costs us $35 a pop as an after market accessory, but their costs would be much lower. Same for machined pulleys, but don't get me started.

DELTA X5 6" J0lNTER
The X5 arrived intact and went together easily. The only problem l had is the outfeed table that seemed to tilt just a bit. l worked for some time to correct this then decided l could live with it. l then had to reset the knives but l really expected that. The X5 runs very smooth and cuts great and l love the rabbet cutter. 0verall, l am glad that l purchased this unit.

* Easily worth what l paid............ ...
Bought this jointer when the price was in the low $3OO range and came with a free mobile base.
Jointer took about an hour to set up. lt was tuned perfectly for the first cut. Kudos to the Delta Guys for making my life easier in setting it up.
l face planed about 3O feet of white pine to start, with no cuts or dashes. The motor easily handles face planing 5 1/2 inches.
Dust collection is only moderate, but it's acceptable. Granted, l have the machine hooked into a shopvac, not a bigger DC unit.
All in all, a GREAT buy for the money. lf l had to spend $5OO for it, then l might not be quite as excited. For a little over $3OO though, you probably can't buy a better 6" jointer.
